Matching Grants

To foster industry-UC research collaboration, the State of California offers two significant matching grant programs. These matching grant programs increase the funds available to research contracts through a direct match by the State of company research funds, in-kind commitments and a reduction in UC overhead.

  • UC Discovery: UC Discovery Grants form a 3-way partnership between UC, Industry Sponsors, and the State of California. UC Discovery Grants are available in five fields of science and engineering: Biotechnology, Communications and Networking, Digital Media, Electronics Manufacturing and New Materials, and Information Technology for Life Sciences. UC Discovery Grants provide a company with an immediate leveraging of R&D funds, California and federal tax credits, and an opportunity to negotiate intellectual property rights. http://www.ucdiscoverygrant.org
  • Micro: Since its establishment in 1981, MICRO has played a role in nurturing the development of the microelectronics and computer industry in California. The MICRO program is meant to seed an active collaboration between UC researchers and their industrial counterparts. The State, through UC, makes a cash contribution of its own, and the University, in addition, waives all overhead on both the industrial and the State cash contribution. The research is carried out at UC by faculty and their students. http://www.ucop.edu/research/micro
